AIN'T NO LOVE

I have this belief that the most talented musical acts cannot be stuffed into one genre.  My ears are fine tuned to seek out songs that sample from the best of every style, so when I stumbled upon Ain't No Love, it was a moment of pure bliss.

The impression I get from this band is that they embody the essence of cool.  Seriously stylish in that AlunaGeorge way, which made complete sense once I discovered that they're Montrealers.

[SIDEBAR: To those who are unfamiliar with the city (and/or me), Montreal is one of my favourite places in the world.  The adjective of choice I constantly go back to when talking about this magical city is 'hip'.  It is a rare place where you can be totally pretentious without being ridiculed/an asshole.  Some of the most interesting characters I've met in the past few years are from Montreal, and they all share this consistent trait of being absolutely passionate about whatever they're doing.  Everyone roaming the streets is freaky style-y, rambling on in French Canadian at lightning speed, and just being incredibly mysterious.  It is the city that inspired The Weeknd's dark, grim Echoes of Silence after all, although the sounds found on that mixtape are nothing like this Ain't No Love song...]

A little rap, a lot of pop, and some electronic vibes make for this fun track that serves perfectly as an end-of-summer anthem.  Kind of a Beastie Boys meets City High moment with a dash of Asher Roth?  That 'life could be amazing' line is really the selling moment, and I like the contrast of sugary sweet pop with rhymes.

Plus songs littered with themes of youth and fun are irresistible, and this is definitely one of those jams.

Have a listen, preferably with the windows down, sunnies on, volume up ;)
